Building a trestle table
Building the base of the legs
The first step of the woodworking project is to build the base for the trestle table. As you can easily notice in the diagram, we recommend you to use 2×4 slats and to cut the ends in a decorative manner. Smooth the cut edges with fine-grit sandpaper.
Building the legs
Next, you have to fit the legs to the supports. Build the legs out of 2×6 lumber and drill pocket holes at both ends. Center the legs to the supports and lock them into place using 2 1/2″ screws. Add glue to the joints and make sure the corners are right-angled.
Building the trims
In order to enhance the look of the dining table, we recommend you to build decorative trims out of 2×8 lumber. Mark the cut lines on the lumber and get the job done with a jigsaw. Smooth the cut edges and drill pocket holes along the straight edges.
Fitting the trims
Fit the trims to the supports and secure them to the structure using 2 1/2″ screws. Add glue to the joints and leave no gaps between the components. In addition, fit pieces of 1×4 lumber under the base, as shown in the diagram. Drill pilot holes through the pieces of lumber and secure them to the base using 1 1/4″ screws and glue.
Building the frame of the table
Next, you need to build the frame of the tabletop. Use 2×6 lumber to get the job done in a professional manner. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the middle support, as well as at both ends of the perpendicular components (the brown ones). Align the components, making sure the edges are flush. Insert 2 1/2″ screws to lock the components together and add glue to the joints.
Building the table panels
Continue the project by fitting the 1×3 slats to the frame of the tabletop. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the slats and secure them to the frame using 1 1/4″ screws. Place the slats equally-spaced and leave no gaps between the components.
Fitting the legs
After assembling the tabletop, you need to lay it on a level surface. Attach the legs to the tabletop, making sure they are centered. Drill pilot holes through the supports and insert 2 1/2″ screws. Also, add glue to enhance the bond of the components. However, we recommend you to insert the screws after fitting the stretcher to the side legs.
Building the stretcher
Build the stretcher for the trestle table out of 2×6 lumber. Use a circular saw to cut both ends as described in the diagram. Work with attention, otherwise the stretcher won’t fit into place properly.
Fitting the stretcher
Fit the stretcher to the legs and drive a few screws to lock everything together tightly. Make sure the corners are right-angled before inserting the galvanized screws.

Last but not least, we recommend you to take care of the finishing touches. In order to get a professional result, fill the holes and the gaps with wood filler and let it dry out for a few hours. Check if there are protruding screws and fix this issue, if necessary.
